The American Bonanza Society (ABS) Air Safety Foundation has inaugurated the "Put Your Gear Down" campaign, an industry-wide effort designed to mitigate the frequency of landing gear mishaps involving Beechcraft Bonanzas, Debonairs, Barons, and Travel Airs. According to AVweb, the organization reports that these retractable-gear models experience some form of gear-related accident nearly every week. These frequent incidents have led to soaring repair costs, causing an increasing number of airframes to be written off as total losses.

Foundation Executive Director Thomas P. Turner identified landing gear accidents as the primary threat to the longevity of the existing Beechcraft fleet. By emphasizing strict operational discipline, the campaign mandates that pilots confirm landing gear status during every approach and refrain from manipulating gear or flap controls while navigating the landing roll. Beyond pilot behavior, the initiative highlights the critical need for rigorous maintenance and precise rigging, as mechanical failure remains a significant contributor to these events.

While the ABS campaign does not guarantee direct insurance premium reductions, it encourages pilots to document their participation and training to provide insurers with evidence of safety-conscious practices. The foundation intends to track the impact of the initiative by monitoring future accident statistics and insurance claims. Turner indicated that the organization is open to collaborating with other owners' groups interested in adopting similar safety protocols for their respective aircraft fleets.
