Tajikistan’s flagship carrier, Somon Air, has officially expanded its operational capabilities with the arrival of its first Boeing 737 MAX 8 aircraft. The jet, acquired through a leasing arrangement with Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, represents a significant technological upgrade for the Central Asian airline. According to FlightGlobal, this delivery marks the first time a MAX-family aircraft has been introduced to the Tajik aviation market, signaling a shift toward more modern, fuel-efficient fleet management.

Currently, Somon Air maintains a fleet exclusively composed of Boeing 737-800 and 737-900 series aircraft. The addition of the MAX 8, powered by CFM International Leap-1B engines, provides the carrier with enhanced range and improved economic performance. Chief executive Abdulkosim Valiev noted that the aircraft’s increased capabilities are central to the company’s strategy of connecting Tajikistan to new international markets. The airline has identified London, Beijing, and Guangzhou as potential destinations that can now be served more effectively thanks to the new equipment.

Beyond the integration of the 737 MAX, the carrier is looking toward a broader fleet transformation. Last year, the airline committed to diversifying its operations by ordering up to four Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner widebody jets. This dual approach—incorporating narrowbody efficiency for regional expansion and widebody capacity for long-haul growth—demonstrates Somon Air’s intent to scale its influence within the competitive international aviation landscape.
