The Hitachi Toshiba Supreme Consortium has officially completed the first of 12 new-generation N700ST high-speed trainsets for the Taiwan High Speed Rail Corp (THSRC). Following a handover ceremony at Hitachiโ€™s Kasado Works in Japanโ€™s Yamaguchi Prefecture, the initial 12-car train is currently in transit and is expected to reach Taiwan in August. According to Railway Gazette, the project represents a significant advancement for the island's rail infrastructure, with the full delivery of the 12-train order now expected by September 2028.

THSRC Chairman Shih Che highlighted that the project is running ahead of its original timeline, with the fleet now targeted to begin commercial operations by July 1, 2026, rather than the initial target of August 2027. The N700ST, which features a distinctive streamlined nose that has earned it the nickname โ€œplatypus,โ€ is a derivative of the Japanese Series N700S Shinkansen. Designed for speeds up to 300 km/h, the trains incorporate energy-efficient silicon carbide traction systems and advanced cooling technology.

In addition to operational performance, the interior of the N700ST has been redesigned to enhance passenger comfort and safety. The standard class cars feature ergonomic seating, while the business class offers a more refined environment with a grey-toned aesthetic. Safety improvements are a central focus, including enhanced accessibility through additional wheelchair spaces and specialized nursing rooms. Furthermore, each unit is equipped with a Toshiba lithium-ion battery system, which provides emergency power to maintain onboard lighting and move the train to a secure location during potential power disruptions or natural events such as earthquakes.

Expected Next Steps

  • 1Sector guideline updates and regional policy adjustments.
  • 2Operational pipeline stress tests and data audits.
  • 3Public briefing feedback cycles from industry stakeholders.
  • 4Implementation milestones aligned with 2028 target metrics.
